Heritage Safari Lodge & Hemingway Tented Camp
The Heritage Safari Lodge was originally built in the 1940’s as a hotel and was a landmark pitstop for weary travellers between Maputo and Durban. It has been lovingly restored to its original colonial grandeur, enhanced with new accommodation and tastefully themed to highlight Zululand’s unique cultural heritage. The Hemingway Tented Camp is on the same grounds as the Safari Lodge – tasteful, beautifully furnished tents offer stylish ‘glamping’ within exquisite gardens. Access to our private Reserve is available to our staying guests with our Rangers and guides to host you during your game-drives.

Game Lodge
Relax in the comfort of your beautifully appointed room, bask by the poolside in the African sun or enjoy a game-drive on our Reserve, then top off the day with refreshing cocktails from the comfort of the lodge’s balcony as a legendary African sunset unfolds. Our spa and gym face onto the Reserve offering further relaxation and the opportunity to exercise during your stay.

Zulu Nyala began back in May of 1981 when Trevor Shaw, the founding member of the Zulu Nyala Group, decided to take a risk and buy a remote 15 500 acre piece of land in the middle of KwaZulu-Natal, an undeveloped but superb wilderness area. ‘Bester’s Game Ranch’, as it was then known, was simply the land with a few small, basic lodges dotted around the mountainside. Shaw named the property Zulu Nyala, after the predominant culture of the area and the beautiful but shy Nyala antelope, which is plentiful in this area but rare elsewhere in South Africa.
In 1991, Trevor Shaw began constructing a ‘gentleman’s camp’, an exclusive 12 room thatch and stone lodge on top of a hill, offering a beautiful view out over the region. This gentleman’s camp has been developed over 30 years to become the magnificent private lodge that today hosts guests from all over the world. Over this period of time, Zulu Nyala also acquired adjoining pieces of land from neighbouring cattle farmers. Today, the game reserve surrounding the Zulu Nyala Game Lodge is a 4 500 acre property that is home to over 40 different animal species.

The Zulu Nyala Group comprises of 2 magnificent privately owned properties - Zulu Nyala Game Lodge & Reserve and the Heritage Safari Lodge & Tented Camp - both in Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Both venues offer a variety of accommodation options to suit our safari guests, from overnight stays to longer visits with conferencing and events, welcomed!
